What to Expect: Order Process and Lead Times Explained
Embarking on a building project can be both exciting and daunting, especially when it comes to understanding the intricacies of permitting and lead times. In this blog post, we’ll discuss exactly what you can expect after securing your permits and submitting detailed plans for your order. We’ll also share insights into typical lead times during various phases of your building journey with Metallic, as well as factors that can influence these timelines.
The Importance of Clarity
We value keeping an open line of communication with our customers. In recent conversations, we heard a consistent theme: the desire for transparency and clarity throughout the ordering process. Knowing what to expect at each stage empowers you to plan effectively and navigate the complexities of your project with confidence. With this in mind, let’s dive into what you can expect during the permitting and shipping process after placing your building order. We’ll also provide you with more insight into lead times that might affect your journey.
Understanding Project Complexity
Project complexity plays a pivotal role in determining processing times. We categorize projects into three distinct categories based on their intricacy.
- Low Complexity (Levels 1-4): These projects are more on the straightforward end of the complexity scale and usually come with shorter lead times
- Mid Complexity (Levels 5-7): Slightly more detailed projects requiring additional considerations and processes
- High Complexity (Levels 8-10): Projects that are more intricate and have longer lead times due to the extra layers of planning and execution involved
For each category, we’ve delineated lead time for key project stages, including permit drawings, approval drawings with enhancements, baseline delivery, and approval release (with no changes).
Breaking Down the Process
For a more comprehensive understanding of our operations, we’ve split our lead times into three vital functions
- Builder Services – This area focuses on the essential support you receive as a builder. Our team is here to assist you, answer your questions, and streamline the process going forward.
- Engineering – This function encompasses all the technical drawings and specifications that are crucial for project approval. Our engineering team is committed to delivering accurate drawings specific to your project requirements to ensure the smooth progression of your project.
- Manufacturing – Finally, our manufacturing team is responsible for bringing your project to life. From the moment your plans are approved, we focus on timely insertion into the fabrication schedule and adjusting where possible to meet your requested delivery dates.
Regional Considerations: Does the location of my project impact lead times?
Yes, your location matters! If your project is situated in the Western region, including states like Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Utah, and Arizona, you may experience slightly extended lead times. We recommend adding about a week to each phase and function for projects in these areas.
Important Notes to Keep in Mind
As you embark on your project journey, here are a few key points to remember:
- The lead times we provide are based on processing the first 3,500 tons recieved in orders received per week.
- If your order exceeds 150 tons, additional delivery time may be required. Our builder services will need to be contacted for further guidance.
- Our lead times apply to projects that involve up to 400 engineering hours and up to 80 design hours for standard permits
- The volume of orders received, and size of an individual order (if over 150 tons) will also affect lead times.
- For high complexity projects rated 10 and above, we encourage you to contact our customer service team for personalized timelines.
Key Milestones: What is a typical timeline from initial order to delivery?
The high-level process flow from the initial order placement to final delivery involves several detailed stages. First, the customer submits an order. The order then goes through an acceptance stage, where it is reviewed and approved. If necessary, clarification is sought to resolve any aspects that are unclear. Once clarified, the order is booked into the system and scheduled for engineering and drafting work. During this phase, detailed designs are developed and finalized.

The designs then undergo a thorough review and checking process before being released to production. Once released, the production plant is scheduled, and fabrication begins. The items are then loaded on the truck for transportation and delivered to the jobsite.
